Cocker Spaniel Dogs and Puppies
Cocker Spaniels are very popular dogs. Typically, when people think about the Cocker Spaniel, they are imagining the American Cocker Spaniel. There are actually two types of Cocker Spaniels, the American Cocker Spaniel, and the English Cocker Spaniel. They differ in size, and in looks. The type of Cocker that we work with here, is the American Cocker Spaniel.
To confuse matters more, there are two basic types of American Cocker Spaniels as well. The "show" style of American Cocker Spaniel has a very heavy, very profuse coat, requiring very frequent grooming. Generally, a cocker of the show type will require grooming every 6 weeks, if kept in the traditional trim (long fluffy legs and ears and belly, shorter coat on the back.) If kept in a shorter trim, the show type of cocker will need grooming every 8 to 12 weeks. Conversely, the "field" type of American Cocker Spaniel has less coat on the legs, belly, and ears, and will need much less grooming, generally every 8-12 weeks for the traditional trim, and ever 12 to 16 weeks for a shorter trim. We have a predominance of the field type of Cocker Spaniel.
Cocker Spaniels are very popular for several reasons. One is that they fill a need by people for a somewhat larger, yet small dog. Most Cocker Spaniels mature between 12 and 22 pounds. This size is ideal for people that have active children, and those that spend alot of time in the outdoors, wanting a companion to take on long walks, go hiking with, go boating with, etc. Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as bird hunting dogs, and the desire to retrieve is very strong. They also love exploring on walks and hikes. Many are still used as hunting dogs, combining their hunting instincts with their wonderful companionship qualities. Cockers love kids. They are a less dominant breed, so they are really a good choice for people with mild temperaments themselves. In fact, people with very dominant personalities are not necessarily perfect owners for Cocker Spaniels, because they may intimidate them, and make them more likely to have submission issues. Cockers get along very well with other dogs. They are average in intelligence, rarely causing difficulty with housebreaking or other training needs. They are very devoted to people, and will work hard to try to please them. They do very well in obedience.
Cocker Spaniels have a soft, silky, double coat , which is low shedding when routinely groomed. They are, however, not a perfect choice for allergy sufferers, unless kept trimmed short.
Personality
On a range of 1-10, 10 being the most active (like a Jack Russel Terrier!), Cocker Spaniels will generally fall in the range of 3-6. They are VERY devoted to their families, and enjoy partaking in any activity with the family.
Size and Colors
Cocker Spaniels vary in size, depending on the size of the parents. Our Cocker Spaniels average between 14 and 20 pounds.
Cockers can be groomed different ways. The traditional trim is short on the "top" of the dog, the back, neck, and face, with fluffy legs, ears, and belly. This trim can be modified by trimming the "furnishings" shorter, yet still fluffy. Many, many, people, especially those that live in rural areas, keep thier cockers trimmed short all over, some leaving the ears fluffy. You can see some different styles in photos below of some of our dogs.
Cockers come in a variety of colors too. The most common color is "buff", which is light tan, all over. Solid red is fairly common. They come spotted too, in bold patterns (kind of like a springer spaniel) and ticked patterns (ticking is the term used for small spots, like on a dalmation.) Chocolate is a rare, and beautiful color. And, one other pattern is black and tan (like a doberman pinscher) or chocolate and tan (my personal favorite.)
Non-Shedding and Allergy-Friendly
Most of our dogs, are non-shedding and allergy friendly allowing you to gain a companion who you'll love to live with. Cocker Spaniels have a soft, silky, double coat , which is low shedding when routinely groomed. They are, however, not a perfect choice for allergy sufferers, unless kept trimmed short.
